Horse Shows and Kids

October 1-2, 2011 Del Mar Horse Park
Many endeavors are downsizing in this challenging economy, but Mark Conley’s Del Sol Classic horse shows are doing the opposite. All held at the Del Mar Horse park, where Conley’s Concord Equestrian Center hunter/jumper training business is based, the next show will be held Oct. 1-2.
Attending horse shows is one way for the whole family to share an interest that extends beyond the computer or the TV in the living-room. While much of our daily lives are made up of sedentary activities, visiting equine events can appeal to sports fans, animal lovers and those who find competitions fascinating. Small children will enjoy watching the horse: older ones may find the finer points of riding or judging catch their interest. This year we partnered with After the Finish Line. A non-profit for Thoroughbred racehorses that are transitioned off the racetrack into a second career of hunting/jumping. Del Sol is offering a thoroughbred -only division and series award.
There's great food at Pony Espresso, dangerous shopping, easy free parking and no admission fee. So come, relax and learn! See ya there!

- Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
- When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.
- Follow the three R’s:
- Respect for self,
- Respect for others and
- Responsibility for all your actions. - Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.
- Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly.
- Don’t let a little dispute injure a great relationship.
- When you realize you’ve made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.
- Spend some time alone every day.
- Open your arms to change, but don’t let go of your values.
- Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.

Labor Day - American Dreams!

Dream Catchers are one of the most fascinating traditions of Native Americans. The traditional dream catcher was intended to protect the sleeping individual from negative dreams, while letting positive dreams through. The positive dreams would slip through the hole in the center of the dream catcher, and glide down the feathers to the sleeping person below. The negative dreams would get caught up in the web, and expire when the first rays of the sun struck them. This one is hand drawn with amazing detail.

ChinDig, my boy
So, I have made it through almost a week and I haven't mentioned horses yet. Today is the day. So I decided I should touch on something very unusual about them for non-horsey readers to find interesting. Horses have five highly developed senses: taste, touch, hearing, smell, and sight. They also have an enigmatic sixth sense, heightened perception, which is very rare in humans.
Horses are unique in that they are the only domesticated animal that evolution has set up for flight and the horse's sensory system is acutely organized for heightened awareness. This extra sensory perception is the key to a horse's ability to transport a person to a place where one feels safe, loved and whole.
Though some people, including scientists, think horses have a sixth sense. There are a few reasons for believing this. Horses can mysteriously find their way back home when in a strange place, miles away. They can sense the approach of a storm or other natural disturbance too. They seem to know when the vet is on his way before he’s even at the barn.
Henry Blake, an English author, has studied, observed, recorded, tested and re-tested horse conversations, which he has turned into a dictionary in his book, Talking With Horses. According to Blake, there are 47 basic messages and 54 sub messages, usually connected with sound. However, he says, some messages are conveyed solely by signs. His work of identifying and listing horse messages is very useful and a solid contribution to the understanding and care of horses, but maybe his most important offering is that on extrasensory perceptions and telepathy. Blake offers a number of experiments as examples of mind communication between man and horse.
Too many people already think love and kisses and good mental vibes will conquer all problems. There is much more to it than that, and the number of serious injuries to horse-huggers proves it.
Horses, with a perfect understanding of horse talk, don’t rush in where angels fear to tread. And that’s telling you something. You don’t just decide one day that mental communication with horses is all you need to be a great trainer or rider.
Look at earthquakes. Many animals can sense an earthquake before the first windows in a building start shaking. But what they are feeling are actually pre-tremors and the ground moving - they can detect it before we can because they feel it. In earthquakes, where tremors don't occur often, it's been noted that animals don't seem to sense what is coming.
Likewise, many animals - especially horses and cattle - can sense a thunderstorm before it occurs.
So Cool......horses!

Butterflies

Butterflies NEW for Spring Summer 2012
- The color in a butterfly's wings does not come from pigment. The color is produced prism-like by light reflected by their transparent wing scales.
- A butterfly's taste sensors are located below their feet.
- The largest butterfly is the Queen Alexandra's birdwing butterfly from Papua New Guinea. The wingspan of the butterfly can reach to be almost one foot.
- A butterfly has to have a body temperature greater than 86 degrees to be able to fly.
Enough reasons to love a butterfly? These were hand drawn and hand painting adds to their reflective wings.

Hand Drawn Giraffe @ Hapa Collective
I first met Janet Peters, the Proprietress of Hapa Collective, as she walked into my showroom in LA. She had spotted the Giraffe and I could see she had an eye for creative and handmade clothing. Janet chose well and many of her picks sold out first day, to both of our delight. She has a few left, so stop in or call Janet @ 562-296-8578.

In 1930, when Marlene Dietrich wore slacks in the movie "Morocco", women across the world lined up to purchase them. Since stores weren't catering to women wearing slacks many of these women lined up in the men's department.

Warhol Day 1 - Bleu Temple
Warhol for the Day -

The original shopaholic, Warhol shopping daily and hoarded a collection of biscuit jars, Native American folk art, taxidermy specimens (including Cecil the Great Dane and an African lion), jewelery, half-used perfume bottles, autographed photographs of movie stars, World Fair souvenirs, cowboy boots, Art Deco furniture, dental molds and his trademark white wigs.
He had great difficulty ridding himself of objects. At the time of his death in 1987, only two rooms of his five story house in New York’s Upper East Side were habitable, the rest was filled with multiple items. Warhol believed that department stores are just another form of museums.
